Improve the quality of your photographs and your ability to make images that are beautiful and appetizing.
Hone your food photography skills and learn from nationally published and award-winning travel, food and people photographer

Workshop Outline:
- Explaining a great food photograph (light direction, light qualities, food subject)
- Choosing the best camera angle and height when photographing food.
- Identifying good light in a location and how to photograph with it.
- How to diffuse and modify light.
- How to identify the best way to photograph food (preparation, cooking, plated, meal in progress).
- Using props that you have available to improve the overall photographic impact.
- Seeing beyond the food. How to look for photographs that tell a story (moments, portraits and).
Class Breakdown by session:
Morning restaurant food shoot : 10am-1:00pm Photographing at Spanish inspired restaurant Contigo in Noe Valley
Grab lunch on your own before afternoon shoot in the Mission
Afternoon street shooting session: 2-4pm test your skills and spend 2 hours in San Francisco's Mission District practicing what you learned. Penny will be roaming and available for questions and advice
Late afternoon critique session: 4-6pm critique, the last 2 hours of the class will be dedicated to looking at your work and a discussion about food photography.
Group is limited to 25 participants
Participants should bring their own camera (both SLR's & point-and-shoots are welcome) a laptop and a jump drive.
This is a shooting workshop so please come prepared to make photographs.
The Food Photography Workshop with Penny De Los Santos is being organized by Tara Austen Weaver of the blog Tea and Cookies and Contigo Kitchen and Cava in San Francisco. This workshop promises to be a wonderful opportunity to learn from an award-winning photographer at one of the San Francisco's best new restaurants.
About Penny:
Penny is a senior contributing photographer for Saveur Magazine, a contributing photographer for National Geographic Magazine. Her work has also appeared in Martha Stewart Living, Newsweek, Time Magazine and Texas Monthly. She has also photographed several cookbooks including Andrea Nguyen's Asian Dumpling cookbook which has garnered national attention. She has received awards from the World Press Photo Competition, NPPA Pictures of the Year, California Press Photographers Association, and International Center of Photography. Penny has a Masters in Visual Communication from Ohio University.
